Photoprotection with Vitamin E and Combined Antioxidants

A series of studies on non-enzymatic stratum corneum antioxidants have shown that vitamin E is the main physiological barrier antioxidant in human skin. In contrast to the nucleated epidermis, the stratum corneum and dermis lack important synergistic antioxidants such as vitamin C. Taken together, these findings suggest a lack of antioxidant protection in the skin barrier as well as in the upper dermis. In fact, these skin areas show the most pronounced oxidative protein damage when exposed to UV rays from the sun. Therefore, supplementation with vitamin E and synergistically active synergistic antioxidants, such as vitamin C, can enhance the photoprotective strategy of sunscreens.
