Extraction of natural beta-carotene

In industrial production, β-carotene is often extracted from β-carotene-rich plants such as carrot, salina, and sea buckthorn.
Extracted from salina
The process first removes the coagulant-iron salt or lead salt covering the salina with acid, then adds vegetable oil and heats it to about 80°C, and then homogenizes the carotene to dissolve in the vegetable oil to form an oil/water turbidity. After the pH value is adjusted to neutrality by adding alkali and cooled, it is separated with a disc centrifuge to obtain an oil solution containing carotene, and the concentration is adjusted to 1.4% containing carotene to be the final product. Using the production process of soybean oil, using No. 6 light gasoline and 10% vegetable oil, the carotene product with higher concentration of oil solution can be produced.
Enzymatic extraction
The main purpose of enzymatic extraction of β-carotene is to increase the content of β-carotene in fruit juice beverages. Studies have shown that pectinase and cellulase treatment of carrot puree can improve the juice yield, the extraction rate of carotene can be increased by more than 2 times, the turbidity is increased, the stability is improved, and the color of carrot juice becomes darker. However, there is no detailed report on the effect of enzyme treatment process parameters on the extraction rate of carotene. The traditional juicing process not only has a low juice yield, but also only 20% of the carotene enters the juice. The enzymatic liquefaction process for producing carrot juice is simple and does not require additional equipment. However, the amount of enzyme must be appropriate, and the amount will bring odor.
